Income Poverty – Results, Methods, and Issues
Estimates of the number of people living in ‘poverty’ are regularly produced by academics, welfare organisations, and in some cases by government. While frequently used at face value in political and social debate, these estimates which frequently suggest that significant numbers of people are living in poverty are also at times contested. This raises the question of what do these figures mean, how much reliance should be placed on them, how are they produced and what are the issues in their derivation. This seminar will look at some recent estimates for Australia, the methodology and assumptions.
