Research with, by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians presents many opportunities and challenges for researchers. Fundamental to Indigenous research is that “[a]t every stage, research with and about Indigenous peoples must be founded on a process of meaningful engagement and reciprocity between the researcher and Indigenous people” (AIATSIS, 2007: 3).
In this seminar, Professors Foley and Martin will discuss some of the key practical and ethical issues to be considered when developing and conducting research with Indigenous Australians – particularly regarding “rights, respect and recognition; negotiation, consultation, agreement and mutual understanding; participation, collaboration and partnership; [and] benefits, outcomes and giving back” (AIATSIS, 2007: 3). Practical examples of ethical challenges for Indigenous and non- Indigenous researchers in making tangible connections with Indigenous Communities will be offered.
