Hunter is a doctoral candidate and academic associate. Hunter completed his Bachelor of Criminology and Honours year at ANU. His research is in criminology, with his Ph.D. focusing on militarisation and change within Australian police. His primary research interest is in policing, with other interests including deviant subcultures and terrorism. He has have previously worked with the Commonwealth Government at the Department of Education.
