Abstract
Using the latest 2011 census data, the introduction to this book provides a snapshot of contemporary Australian families – what do our families look like, and how have they come to be this way? We provide historical background to recent trends in family formation, and preview the contemporary patterns discussed in the substantive chapters that follow. What do current trends suggest for Australian families in the future? What are the factors that may determine the continuation or reversal of these trends?
