Australian Data Archive

The Australian Data Archive (ADA) provides a national service for the collection and preservation of digital research data and to make these data available for secondary analysis by academic researchers and other users. ADA manages data on behalf of our depositors, providing processing, review and publishing to enable your research data for use across Australia and around the world. The Australian Data Archive is part of the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods at The Australian National University (ANU).

Our History

The Australian Data Archive (ADA) was established in 1981 by the Australian National University (ANU). ADA was established with a brief to provide a national service for the collection and preservation of computer readable data relating to social, political and economic affairs and to make these data available for further analysis. ADA now supports over 6000 data files from 1500 projects dating back to 1833 through to the present day.

Data at ADA

ADA provides access to Australia’s major social science data, including:

  • National social attitude surveys such as the Australian Election Study, World Values Survey, and ANU Polls
  • Longitudinal studies such as the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth
  • Health and wellbeing surveys such as the National Drug Strategy Household Survey
  • Historical collections such as the Historical and Colonial Census Data Archive

Our Services

A team of professional data archivists provides both stewardship and outreach services to the Australian community. The archive:

  • acquires, documents, preserves and disseminates data online
  • provides the only comprehensive social science data
  • collection in Australia, with a catalogue of over 6000 data files
  • hosts wide range of date types, including quantitative, qualitative, time series and panel data, and historical statistics with specialist services in specific subject areas including longitudinal and qualitative studies.
