Abstract
The ANU Regional Living Cost Index (LCI) calculates an index for living cost changes for each region of Australia (SA3) belonging to capital cities and major cities surrounding those capitals. We estimate an LCI for just over 200 SA3 regions in Australia on a quarterly basis between December 2009 and June 2022. We find that over the past 12 months regions more towards the outer suburbs of major cities have experienced larger living cost increases compared to more inner-city regions. Belmont-Victoria Park in Perth is estimated to have the largest increase in living costs in the survey at 6.4 per cent over the year to June 2022 while Sydney Inner City the lowest at half that (3.2 per cent).
